Trail Description
Dinkey Peak in North Vancouver is one of those tiny hikes that feels more like a bonus viewpoint than a full outing. At just 1.6 km out and back with only about 68 m of elevation gain, it’s a quick 30-minute leg-stretcher that still gets you up to around 1089 m with a proper bluff and a lookout feel. It’s an easy route on paper, but conditions and bugs can make it feel spicier than the stats suggest.
The trail mixes rocky sections with softer forest path, and you’ll cross near ski runs in the Mount Seymour area before ducking back into the trees. On a clear day, the bluff at Dinkey Peak gives decent views for the effort, and many locals link it with the Dinkey Peak Loop or nearby spots like De Pencier Bluff to turn it into more of a day. If you’re into peak-bagging, the actual summit is a bit beyond where some GPS tracks end, so don’t be surprised if the “true top” is slightly farther along.
Recent hikers mention fog, rain, and even hip-deep snow in shoulder seasons, so Dinkey Peak is best from summer into early fall when the snow is gone and ski runs are quiet. In winter or spring you may need microspikes, and route-finding gets tricky where the trail crosses ski terrain and re-enters the forest, so watch for markers and don’t be afraid to backtrack. Bugs can be brutal here, with reports of clouds of flies and mosquitoes, so bring strong bug spray, a head net if you have one, and stay alert for wildlife like bears, which are more common on quieter trails.
