Trail Description

South Gibson Trail – Three Falls Trail in E.C. Manning Park is a solid full-day outing if you want some distance without brutal elevation. This 20.9 km out-and-back climbs about 507 m to roughly 1,387 m, so it feels steady rather than steep, and most hikers wrap it up in around five and a half hours. It’s rated moderate, but the length and some narrow sections give it a bit of an edge, especially in shoulder season or winter.

The first part along South Gibson Trail is straightforward, with mostly gentle grades, some roots, and a mix of forest and partial views opening up as you go. Once you link into Three Falls Trail, you hit the waterfall viewpoints, with Shadow Falls and the final falls area giving you the best payoff, including strong mountain views when the sky is clear. The path does tighten up in spots with some drop-offs and rockier footing, so it’s not technical, but you do need to pay attention.

Recent hikers in Manning Park report that in winter this route can be very snowy, with people managing in spikes while others use snowshoes, and often having to break trail along South Gibson until the more-traveled Three Falls section. Expect the trail to get narrower near the end and know that spray, snow, or low cloud can hide one of the falls, even when the last viewpoint and surrounding peaks look great. In snow-free months, the trail is easier to follow, but signage near the ski hill can be confusing, so download a map, bring traction in early season, and always check Manning Park access and road closures before you go.
