Trail Description

Lightning Lake Loop in E.C. Manning Provincial Park is one of those easy wins: 8.5 km of mostly flat, well-groomed trail wrapped around a chain of bright blue lakes, usually done in about 2 hours. It’s classed as easy, with only about 142 m of gain, so it works for casual walkers, kids, and trail runners looking for a mellow cardio lap in Manning Park.

The loop circles Lightning Lake with constant water views, forest shade, and that classic Manning Park pine smell. You’ll cross Rainbow Bridge, wander along singletrack beside the shoreline, and catch reflections of the surrounding hills on calm days. The scenery is more about peaceful lakes, clear water, and fall colours or morning mist than big dramatic peaks, but there’s something to look at around almost every bend.

Current reports say the Lightning Lake Loop is well maintained, mostly smooth, and great for both hiking and running, but conditions swing with the season. In winter and early spring, expect compact snow and sometimes icy sections on the south side; microspikes or light traction are strongly recommended, while snowshoes are usually optional unless there’s a fresh dump. In summer and fall, the trail can get dusty and busy, so arrive early on weekends as the Lightning Lake day-use parking lot often fills by late morning. Watch for downed trees on the far side of the loop, occasional bears, cool mornings even in July, and always changing mountain weather, especially in shoulder seasons.
