Trail Description

Othello Tunnels via Kettle Valley Rail Trail is one of those classic Hope walks that’s easy on the legs and big on history. This 7.1 km out-and-back follows the old Kettle Valley Railway grade, so it’s mostly flat, wide, and straightforward, with only about 149 m of elevation gain and a mellow top altitude around 184 m. Plan on about 1 hour 45 minutes at a relaxed pace.

The trail starts from the Othello Tunnels parking area near Hope and quickly settles into a wide gravel path following the Coquihalla River. You’ll get steady river views, steep canyon walls, and a few spots where you can step off to look down at the creek rushing below. Even though you’re close to the highway and will hear traffic at times, the scenery and the old rail corridor vibe carry the experience.

Right now, the big thing to know is that the actual Othello Tunnels are closed indefinitely due to storm damage, so you can only hike the Kettle Valley Rail Trail up to the tunnel entrances. It’s still a very easy, dog-friendly walk, and the flat grade makes it accessible for most hikers and families. Expect the best conditions from April to October, watch for occasional wet or muddy patches after rain, and bring a light jacket since the canyon can feel cooler than downtown Hope.
