Trail Description

Hope-Nicola Valley and Kawkawa Lake Lookout in Hope, BC is one of those low-key trails locals love for a quick escape. It’s an 8.4 km out-and-back with about 288 m of gain, topping out around 391 m, so it feels more like a steady walk than a grind, usually done in around two and a half hours. You get legit mountain and valley views without having to commit to a full-day mission.

The trail winds through quiet forest, mostly shaded, which is a bonus on hot days. The Nicola Valley lookout side is the highlight, with big mountain views and a more open feel, while the Kawkawa Lake portion is softer, with lake views, a couple of hidden chairs, and a more overgrown, wilder vibe. Some hikers just do the upper lookout arm for the best bang-for-buck views and skip the lower spur, which doesn’t offer much scenery.

Recent reports say the Hope-Nicola Valley and Kawkawa Lake Lookout trail is easy to follow, though not well marked, so having a downloaded map helps. Expect some fallen logs, washouts, overgrown sections toward the lake, and signs of wildlife, including bear scat and the occasional tick, so bring spray, check your dog, and make noise. Pipeline construction and a Kawkawa Lake road closure have meant accessing the trailhead from Othello Road and walking a short stretch of closed road, but once you’re on trail it’s quiet, family-friendly, and a solid shoulder-season or evening hike near Hope.
