Trail Description
Falls Lake Trail is one of those rare “low effort, high reward” hikes right off the Coquihalla, between Hope and Merritt in British Columbia. At just 1.6 km return with about 82 m of gain, it’s an easy out-and-back that usually takes around half an hour, but lands you at a clear mountain lake with big views of the surrounding peaks.
The walk starts with a short river crossing on a narrow plank, then heads into cool forest on a well-built path with boardwalks over the wet spots and some exposed roots. Most of the Falls Lake Trail is shaded, so even on warm days it feels refreshing as you wind gently up to the small campground and the lake, where you can swim, relax on the shore, or just soak in the views toward Nak Peak and Zoa Peak.
Recent hikers report the road to the trailhead is usually snow free by early June, but in late fall, winter, and early spring you can expect snow, icy sections, and sometimes an unploughed access road that adds extra walking; spikes are handy and snowshoes are rarely essential. There’s ongoing construction at times near the highway and trailhead, but crews have been helpful and clear signs point you to the start. Expect bugs in summer, bring bear spray and make noise as black bears are around, and consider packing a small bag to haul out any litter so Falls Lake stays in good shape for the next crew looking for a quick leg stretch off the Coquihalla.
